Winter Masterclass 2020

Join the Philadelphia Vocal Conservatory for a masterclass with soprano Karen Huffstodt, accompanied by Laurie Rogers on piano. Students of Philadelphia Vocal Conservatory teachers Michael Ashby and Maria Russo will work with Ms. Huffstodt on vocal technique, interpretation, and performance practice for the benefit of all in attendance. There will be an intermission with an American Tea (and Coffee!) Party.

Karen Huffstodt is a world-class soprano who has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in a diverse repertoire that has encompassed the leading roles of Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, and Strauss. Her performances have consistently been characterized by great intensity, an extraordinary stage appearance, and a voice that perfectly embodies the heroines she portrays on the stage. She presently serves on the Voice Faculties of Rowan, Monmouth, and Lehigh Universities and maintains active private studios in New York City, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Laurie Rogers has been the Director of Young Artist Programs and Head of Music Staff for Opera Saratoga since 2011, and currently serves as Associate Music Director of Opera and Principal Vocal Coach at the University of Alabama. She has served as Associate Conductor with LA Opera, and has prepared productions for the San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Minnesota Opera, and Washington National Opera, among many others. Recently she conducted Little Women at Simpson College, Trouble in Tahiti at Carnegie Mellon University, and Lucrezia Borgia at the University of Delaware, where she will conduct Le Nozze di Figaro later this year. She was integrally involved in the creation of Heggie’s Moby-Dick, Ricky Ian Gordon’s A Coffin in Egypt, Danielpour’s Margaret Garner, and DiChiera’s Cyrano. Ms. Rogers gives master classes throughout the country, regularly judges for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and has been published in “Classical Singer” magazine. She lives in Philadelphia, where she maintains an active coaching studio.
